It takes four easy steps to include a quiz in your PowerPoint presentation. All you have to do is follow these steps.
Your first step will be to build your lesson or learning material in PowerPoint. Secondly, you should develop your quiz in Google Forms. Thirdly, because Google Forms live online, it is a simple matter of linking to it from PowerPoint. Finally, if you choose, Google Forms will automatically create a Google Sheet where the learners’ names and responses will appear.
Create your lesson in PowerPoint.
Enough said already! We can all create lessons in PowerPoint. Nevertheless, there are some things I would keep in mind if I were to create my next lesson. We have to implement six types of activities in our lessons.
The conversational framework
- At some point, all learners are required to read something, watch something, or listen to someone. This is where learners acquire the concepts about the material that the lesson is about.
- Likewise, learners are required to direct their own discovery of information that the lesson is about. To achieve that, learners go to external resources to make inquiries and find additional information.
- More is needed for learning to take place. Learners require opportunities to practice the concepts that started to form during the first two teaching and learning activities. Practice activities with feedback from the teacher help to cement the concepts being learned.
- When learners discuss the concepts amongst themselves, the concepts are further cemented into place. Learning is a social activity. There should, of course, be structure to the discussion, and learners should provide feedback on what was discussed and what consensus was reached during the discussion and get feedback from the teacher on their deliberations.
- Learners that produce their own work related to the topic have further opportunities to solidify the establishment of the concepts. Again, teachers give feedback.
-
Teachers often create a learning environment where opportunities to collaborate on tasks are made available. Agreeing on what needs to be done by whom at what standard, in a group-task, gives yet more opportunity for concepts being learned to be embedded.
More on the conversational framework
This video at FutureLearn where Diana Laurillard, author of the Conversational Framework explains the process of teaching and learning very well. Since this post is about quizzes in PowerPoint, I have included a PowerPoint presentation below, that contains a quiz.
Use your PowerPoint resource to give some practice opportunities to your learners.
Use your Chrome browser, and head over to Google Forms. I click here to get access to my Google Apps:
Google Forms
The Google Forms link is clear and quite low down the list of available apps. If you can’t find it immediately, search for it online.
You may have to use your Gmail account details to log in. Create a new form by clicking on the + sign.
Read what Google says about using forms and creating quizzes from their forms.
Google Sheets
One of the things I like to do is link my Google form with a Google sheet, to keep track of things.
Once your quiz (a type of form) is in place you will have the opportunity to ‘Send’ it.
The send button sits towards the top right of your screen. For one thing, Google Forms will create a link that can be used in PowerPoint.
Go back to your PowerPoint slide and create an object on it that the learner can click on. Paste the link that you copied from your form so that your learner may attempt your quiz online. This post covers the topic of adding links to PowerPoint documents.
A short working example
A quiz is included in this simple three-page PowerPoint presentation. You may click on this link if you want the presentation to open in your browser.
